The Importance of Knowledge in Advaita

Advaita is grounded in interpretation of the sacred texts, or Shruti, not philosophical arguments. Most ancient Indian thinkers believed that even deepest understanding needed to be combined with long practice. For Shankara, such things as meditation and ritual may be useful as steps along the path to liberation but ultimately liberation is secured through knowledge.
