How Patients Make Medical Decisions
The ideology of the unit was very strongly in favor of patient autonomy. Their mantra was our patients make their own medical decisions. The practicalities of you come into the clinic three times a week, can you manage the machine at home were important to them. So they made a big deal about the patients choosing the modality of dialysis. But every other medical decision was treated as a very ordinary sort of decision that was made in whatever ways doctors and patients together made decisions.
