The ideology of the unit was very strongly in favor of patient autonomy. Their mantra was our patients make their own medical decisions. So they made a big deal about the patients choosing the modality of dialysis. But every other medical decision was treated as a very ordinary sort of decision that was made in whatever ways doctors and patients together made decisions.
