Rousseau doesn't look like a systematic thinker, because he writes dialogues, novels and treatises. The social contract is a treatise, but it's like self-consciously fragmentary. There is a thread that runs through most, if not all of his thought, the problem of vanity. He asks where can we be happy in the contemporary world? And you don't get very good answers.
