It was not at all clear that you get a chain reaction. That's why before we could build a bomb we had to build a nuclear reactor. And if you think about it as quite extraordinary, there were in total about 600,000 people involved in the Manhattan Project to build the bomb during the Civil War. Astonishing. They kept the secret. It was never revealed until the end of the war.
