Aurelius marcus was a notable stoic and rome's emperor from one 61 to one 80. The best known concept from meditations is usually paraphrased as some sort of analogy featuring a coffee mug. Stoicism suggests, much like buddhism, that you feel this sadness because of your attachment to the Mug. But if instead, you had formed a relationship with the mug with the understanding that you did not truly own it, but that it was instead, in a way, on loan to you, then loss would be less painful.

If you came across Stoicism in the early 2010's (as I did) you likely heard something about a coffee mug shattering into a million pieces and how you could use this analogy to deal with death and loss. That probably didn't make a lot sense to you at first - it may have even seemed insane. There's something to this caffeinate analogy, though - and there's something practical we can extract from it to apply in our daily lives.
