Tasidus tells us he couldn't beat these rumors that were already arising that he had one started the fire and that too he had done some sort of weird performance during the fire. So this is why according to the sources he found a group to scapegoat which was the christians they were already kind of suspected of being hostile to rome due to their religious practices and refusal to participate in state religion. But tasidus doesn't seem to really object to Nero's punishment of them on the grounds that he thinks that they're good people but he does seem to think that it was more or less a pretext and a diversion that would keep Nero from being accused of the fire
