Christopher Columbus landed in Portugal on March 3, 1493. King John II immediately laid claim to the new territory that Columbus had just discovered. Queen Isabella and King Joao of Portugal therefore negotiated their own division in the globe. The agreement pushed north-south dividing line west 370 leagues from Cape Verde.
