When you're studying something that you do need to study with an understanding and an eye to what that belief structure is. Sometimes we hold on to a tradition, even if it's out of date, culturally speaking, because we want to have an access point to the past. As we look at the divine couple, as we look at gender dynamics, we want to take these things into account. And i think that the point of the god and the goddess is that they are attached to history and to mystery.
