Hitchhiking is a puzzling act of implicit trust between strangers. It suggests that most people trust strangers out of obligation to societal norms. We trust strangers even when we don't have a good reason because we're conditioned to believe it's the right thing to do. Not trusting others can induce feelings of guilt or anxiety, so it's better to believe the best in people.
