Yupinupa Whalers and the Bowhead Whales

When i started doing this research, i whales were not remotely on my horizon. I wasn't thinking about them at all. And it was really because the historical sources, and particularly indigenous communities and folks in communities in russia and on the us side of the bering straiht that kept pointing me to bowhead whale history. They were present as a really active, kind of constitutive parts of whether or not human beings were able to carry out what they wanted to in a given day. The nineteenth century commercial whalers also understood bowheads as being very active participants im in their society. It looked to me like the whales were doing exactly that.
