In the 14 hundreds, just before europeans show up, it's estimated that about 400 to 700 thousand people lived in florida. It was home to one seve of the entire population of north america above the rio grande. There were some common, widespread practices that tied people together all around this region. But there also was a basic regional split that had emerged between northern and southern florida - with a line running more or less from tampa bay northeastward up towards saint augustine.
