Isn't Tragedy the Object of Our Desire?
Nica asks, would it be necessary for the tragic man of such a culture to desire tragedy as his own proper helen in the way? And he basically, by implication, calls himself a young romantic. So that's what he criticizes in his self, criticism. But on the other side of that coin, i think we see that nica is on the path to something right? That's why he's drawing this out and saying, but listen, this is a different tone. It's driving at something fundamentally different from the utopian optimism for the return to the garden which the romantic ultimately is driving towards.
