Our Flag Means Death by Steed Bonnet
Pirates didn't want to engage in hand thand combat. It cuts down on man power when they lose people to injury or death. If you've got people fighting back, it's that much harder for you to get the goods from the ship. So there is a feedback loop between what pirates actually did and the fantastical stories people told about them. And that leads us to steed bonnet, the main character in our flag means death.
