The selfish gene is referring to the shared interest in helping that our genes survive and thrive. An aversion of this is ethna centraism. We tend to help out and be trusting and accepting of people who are in our ethnic group, not outsiders. Looking from a sacile perspective, we definitely would like to socialize people into being nice. Because if you can get people to be nice, the overall society'll pay off, and the individual pay offs will actually be higher.
