How Much Data Do We Really Need?

Until recently, it was pretty normal for distribution utilities to not have any data at all about what was happening at an individual customer location. That's why they thought about their customers as meters. As those distribution utilities have started to roll out smart metering systems, they have more information about what's happening at the customer location but not always much more. It's certainly helpful to have data points every 15 minutes for a customer, but that's actually pretty close to best for utilities,. They've really made a significant investment in data integration acquisition. For an individual customer u it typically lags by several hours, and that's the time that it takes for data to get from the meter to the utility
