In order for you to see a relation between two things, like the fatter than relation between two cats or the greater than relation between X and 100, you need to have both of the things given. And that is because perceiving a relation is a matter of comparing two or more things. If experience doesn't give you reality, if everything that you could experience could be false, well, then you can never see the truth of your opinions. So phenomenology says this distinction between appearance and being between what is and what appears between what's manifest and what's real has to go.
