At a Distance

CHAPTER

Zen Garden Design in Japan

The ideal understanding is when you can hear the world in its many parts, speaking to you as if you was a language. That's the most fascinating thing about understanding the garden for me. A zen garden is those gardens that we see in japan in all the picture books. Have built into them an understanding of nature that comes from the eddo periods - which includes shinto and buddhist religion. But it doesn't include scientific understanding such as what we have now with earthquakes. One of the gardens i built in new york city is called thrust: capturing that moment where you see the mountain as the forces beneath it pushing it up.
