Historian bonnie wheeler argues that while women with power were not unusual in the twelfth century, eleanor should still be recognized as a skilful power broker. One version of the story would have us believe that eleanor was so overcome jealousy that she was driven to acts of murder. Some credit eleanor with making the court a welcome home to troubadours, poets and other artists. But you should be aware that this debate is still on going.
