The Stanford Prison Experiment showed that people will engage in acts of cruelty if there is a figure of authority recruiting them to what they think is a righteous cause. Zimbardo made the guards co-experimenters by coaching them to be cruel and in the name of prison reform ultimately when they showed the world what happens when you put normal people in a prison situation. The findings were really interesting and worthwhile, so we didn't throw the baby out with the bath water.
