The Conservatives' Primed Expectations for the Government to Step in to Help Mortgage Holders
Is it any surprise that the public, and many of their own backbenchers are demanding that the government step into help mortgage holders? I think that that has become inevitable. You can sense the frustration in number 10 and number 11 Downing Street about this,. you know, you'll speak to aid to say, look, we're not in a pandemic now. We can't always intervene. And if they were to intervene to avert hardship for mortgage holders, for lots of different reasons, it would be a mad thing to do. It would be unfair to the renters that Claire was talking about earlier and people don't own homes - obviously massively regressive. But above all else, entirely counterproductive
