Introduction

Nuclear reactors could be used to melt ice on places like Europa or Enceladus, where the heat from the reactor is allowing your probe to melt slowly through kilometers of ice. One idea that NASA has been working on for a few years is called a lattice confinement fusion fast fission reactor. It's very complicated, and I didn't really understand it going into it. And so we spend a lot of this interview talking about how this reactor would work; what its advantages and disadvantages are.
