Duncan and i wondered about what does it take to make a world small. If you only knew your nearest neighbors then the average path length would be enormous. The problem is that of the hundred people i know when they know a hundred people a lot of those are the same people because we live near each other or because we're in the same profession or whatever. It's not just a random choice of a hundred people anywhere on earth but so we have a more precise definition of clustering.
