Marks and Backunan's Great Disagreement
The great fault line between them was, of course, over the matter of the state and state power. Mark's revolutionary programe required a step where the proletariat seized not just the economic means of production, but the political power of the state. Buccunan believed that this would be the first time in history that society would not be ruled by a tiny, self anointed ruling class. For marks, seizing and wielding state power was an essential part of the revolutionary project.
