The Rise and Fall of Free Festivals

Free festivals emerged in the 1970s and 80s as a way for people to get out of cities. They were popular with unemployed young people who wanted to move away from city life. You could spend your entire summer just visiting free festivals every weekend in the 80s. But I always found the food, oh, Jesus Christ, you pretty much had to take your own up or there would be really ropey veg stew on sale.
