Papaten is a method of dealing with an object or happening in real world, to reduce it into an object of sensory perceptions and then of the mind. It's only when we are identified with this particular body and mind, and for us there are others that we can be truly ourselves. If i have a sense of oneness with others, i'll never do something uninteresting even if I am annoying to them. That person will be very careful of not creating trouble for others, not annoying. Even if you don't intend to, you end up offending others.
Inspired by the 15th chapter of the Ashtavakra Gita, Swami Sarvapriyananda gives a discourse on the nature of the Self.
