The word self-assured is a bit different than the word confident because it has this added sense of inner knowing and quiet conviction. Assure comes from the French word which means to reassure calm or protect. Self-assured also comes from the Latin root secures, again probably pronouncing that wrong, but it means secure or made safe. We all know the difference between a person who are secure versus a person who is insecure and constantly needs the reassurance of others to feel worthy.
