The Evolution of Dungeons and Dragons

The first book that came out for advanced Dungeons and Dragons in 1977 was the monster manual. This is the dividing line between the original white box or wood grain box Dungeons and Dragons and what we have come to know as advanced D&D. A lot of the stuff in the monster manual you could have found these monsters being sort of worked out in Dragon before 1977 advanced Dungeon and Dragons had even been released.
