The Primary Caregiver, a Language Not Their Own
Lacan: Infants learn that the best way to have their needs met is to articulate them as demands. "Use your words as what the primary caregiver tells these kids," Lacan says of crying children. The child's introduction to language, a language that is not their own, will be eventually referred to as their mother tongue. All of these positions for Lacan are functions.
