The Role of Reverence in Vatican City

During World War II, the Vatican officially stays neutral. Both the allied and Axis forces exercise some restraints. The reverence for religion plays into that much more than any kind of strategic planning. No army in the Western world wants to be the people responsible for bombing the Pope. That's a hard one to walk back.
