According to Marx, the economics of capitalism tear apart backwards social superstitions and conventions. And they forced unproductive peasants to become productive pro-laterians or productive large-scale agricultural entrepreneurs. So in Russia, which was still basically governed by a monarch with a quasi-futal land-owning aristocracy, where capitalism was just getting started, capitalists and liberal intellectuals were waving around desk happy towel. But where the Russian populist socialist appreciated Marx and Engels' analysis and critiques of capitalism, they were disgusted by their attitudes towards the peasants.
