Is Free Public Transit a Good Idea or a Bad Idea?

Is free, or as people like you call it, fair, free public transit a good idea or a bad idea? On balance, i cannot answer that without contest. Not everyone has access to a smart phone or to a credit card. So in our efforts to try and be as inclusive as possible, we end up making paying to use transit as confusing as possible. We also need to ask, where do cars fit into all this? I want to make driving great, but rare.
