So surplus value could only begin to be extracted when people had time to work for others. You know, you couldn't do it. You couldn't work for someone beyond your means unless you actually had some of your basic needs covered. That is, you weren't trying to struggle to survive every single day. In other parts of the world where crops could grow more easily, there wasn't the need for such kind of hierarchies. These a division of labor and so on.
