Socrates insists that this must be connected with the divided line passage. Who sets up the shackles? They're chained by their necks,. You have people carrying images that are at an elevated level behind them, but in front of the fire. That's how the shadows are cast upon a wall. It is weird. There are so many questions. I wonder Plato, you'd like to be able to explain everything in the Republic, but there are questions I've always had about this.
