If you really love this guy, fine, work through it. For me, I would just never spend the time. Life's too short to work this hard to get somebody you just remet out of a cult. Do not merge your bank account. Do not even marry him because you will end up taking on debt that he incurs and just don't don't sign on to that. You will regret it.
