In the fifties, hoffman was something of a celebrity. But his work dried up almost overnight in 19 58 when he worked with paul tanner. Tanner had built an instrument that could be more sensibly controlled than just waving your hands near it. The electro theramin let the player control the pitch more accurately but also do staccato notes easily. Two days after he finished building it, he was in the studio cutting his own equivalent of hoffman's fortis albums - music for heavenly bodies. We will actually be seeing hoffman again, playing on a session for an artist we're going to look at in a few months.
