Greg Boington's squadron racks up 35 and a half kills while he's recuperating from his ankle surgery. This is the birth of the black sheep. Admiral William Halsey, who we've talked about for a long time now,. was fully aware that his area of operations needed fighter squadrons. So with a dearth of state side form squadrons, but a plethora of deskbound pilots in the Pacific, Halsey had the men he needed to form several new squads.
