An I message was originally coined back in the 1960s. There's a few key principles around an I message which are common with nonviolent communication. You're firstly separating your observation of some behavior from the evaluation of that behavior. The second thing is that you want to express a feeling and you wants to express it in a way that exhibits Responsibility for that feeling like that you own it for example.
