How to Build a Retirement Portfolio Without Stock Investments

Is it possible to build a retirement portfolio without stock investments? I don't really see anything nearly competitive with stocks. Rental houses and apartments are in theory a way to get similar returns to the stock market or better if you are good at managing. Those other types of investments have intrinsic value, which is an early way of saying those things are in the business of generating cash.
