The Risks of Reporting a Rape

Lana Sawyer's decision to go to the law and charge Henry Bebelo with rape was very unusual at the time. Most women then, as now, don't report sexual assaults, especially when the perpetrator is in acquaintance. Part of the challenge for Lana Sawyer was that there were a whole series of gatekeepers standing between her and a potential conviction. At each stage, the gatekeeper she was dealing with was more anonymous, less invested in her personal welfare.
