Mcconal taceco is the author of a new book about Japanese history. She looks at how suicide was seen as an act of redemption in 19th century Japan. In one scene, Tikeko and her 30 female warriors offer their services to shoguns forces who are trying to break through enemy lines. The commander basically laughs in her face because he does not want his men fighting alongside women. Mcconal: "Suicide existed as a kind of get out of jail free card to reclaim a lost sense of honor or dignity"
