earn leeway by doing good quality work you know and if you're clearly critical thinking and figuring out what does drive value that aligns with the work that you're interested in doing i don't see a good manager like you described isn't necessarily going to punish you for that right. I wouldn't say that the ask forgiveness not permission approach is necessarily the best route to go in the short term for everyone but there is absolutely something to be said though for being able to align what you're interested with with what you're doing over time.
