Jiang Chinghua - The Most Abrasive Event in Sino-Us Relations in 20 Years

In 1970, Pung Ming Ming was granted a US visa to work at the University of Michigan. One of the strings attached to the visa was that he wouldn't engage in any talk of Taiwan independence while in the US. The elder Jiang ranted about this and called it 'the most abrasive event in Sino-US relations in 20 years' In 1971, the United States passed administrative control of Okinawa and the Senkaku Islands to Japan. This island chain, northeast of Taiwan, has been a stress point ever since.
