Insanity Is a Hard Thing to Prove
In 1982 a jury found john hinkley jr not guilty by reason of insanity. It was only the second time in us history that a would-be presidential assassin had been acquitted with an insanity defense. In response President reagan signed the insanity defense reform act making it more difficult to use the defense in federal court Long after the shooting Reagan's poll numbers remained high and he made good on his campaign promise to lower taxes. He died in 2004 after living with alzheimer's disease for 12 years12 years after that john hankley was released from st elizabeth's hospital and allowed to live again.
