When did this importance of focusing on material flows and on the embeddedness of human society in the environment first emerge? Well I think that probably you can draw lines centuries back. But I think I will start with the mid-19th century because this is where we got the series about thermodynamics, which focus on energy. The idea that you can actually study economics also in energy terms dates back to the understanding of thermodynamics.
