The story of the black freedom struggle is actually often narrated as a narrative of declension. The we earlier being a we that included helping whites come to terms with what they needed to change. And then subsequently it's they have to get their own stuff together. So at one moment, the we is us. Another moment,. the we is just black folk. One moment is an aspirational we. The we to which we aspire. And so and then there's a moment where he inhabits the voice of white America.
