The first life forms were basic bacteria at a certain point and they depended on the use of these proton gradients that they had basically figured out how to continue to replicate just within themselves. And then another ancient bacteria apparently you know two, two and a half billion years ago, and because of that merging of these mitochondria or these bacteria complex life was able to essentially evolve. So if anyone wants to read more and learn more about the depth of that there's this researcher, Dr. Nick Lane from the University College of London who you might even want to have on your podcast at some point if you can get him he's really total genius.
