"My worst trunk novel is called Nightlife. And it is me trying to do Bob Aspirin because I hadn't found really Terry Pratchett yet," he says. "There's a part where he eats a metal carrot which is clearly the antecedent of the Mistborn series." He adds: "I was enamored with this idea of a barbarian who used like a metal carrot to hit people".
