How Did the British Solve the Hidra Problem?
From the 1860s in Northern India, the colonial government register people who they classify as UNIX. Hidras are seen as being both in obscene presence in public space but also as being sort of disorderly and often described through terms for like, filth and dirt. So, all these sort of people get classified as uniques because of the ways that they have non-normative gender practices. And then, in the 1860s, they also begin to remove children from the households of so-called UNEX. That is an attempt to cause the Hidra community to die out.
