The Duomo De Carve
David was one of 12 Old Testament figures to adorn the buttress of the Duomo's front. Augustino de Duchio had won the contract to do it, but he didn't have any experience in selecting raw stone. He hired quarrymen to hue a stone that was 18 feet long and weighed over 24,000 pounds. Donatello actually began this series 52 years earlier in the early 1400s in 1410 with the terracotta sculpture of David, of Joshua.
