i think it's with strauss that we can have reached this crescendo of music of harmonic complexity, and then things pull back and become simple again. It reminds me of the talk that simon de deo gave at usipi a few years ago on a very similar process going on in science itself. Every hundred and 50 years or so, we see this rise and fall of confidence that there will be a vast, unifying, conciliant theory of everything into which we can sweep all these seemingly disparated domains of scientific knowledge.
